La Salle beats San Beda, wins 2014 FilOil Premier Cup title

The De La Salle Green Archers defeated the San Beda Red Lions, 71-66, to clinch the 2014 FilOil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup championship at the San Juan Arena.

This is the first time that DLSU topped the tournament since 2007, also against SBC.

La Salle’s Jason Perkins scored nine of his 14 points in the fourth quarter while his teammate, point guard Jeron Teng, was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

The Red Lions ended the first half on top, 41-32. They gradually stretched the lead to as much as 12 in the 3rd quarter.

The Green Archers began the final quarter down by eight before going on a 13-5 run to tie the score at 61-all. The game swung back and forth until the 1:00 minute mark of the game, when San Beda’s Ryusei Koga and Ola Adeogun made crucial misses.

San Beda head coach Boyet Fernandez called a timeout with his team down 66-69 and with only ten seconds left. They needed to score point shot to force overtime.

However, the team lost possession with just five seconds left in the game after a botched inbound. Two free throws from Almond Vosotros sealed the win for DLSU.

The Green Archers’ senior men’s basketball team also topped the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) and the Philippine Collegiate Champions League tournaments last year. They will try to defend their UAAP crown beginning next month.
