February 11 2013 Evelio Javier holiday in Panay provinces

The four provinces of Panay Islands namely Aklan, Antique, Capiz, and Iloilo will have a special non-working holiday this February 11 (Monday) as the nation marks the 27th death anniversary of Marcos-era opposition leader Evelio Javier. This is by virtue of Republic Act 7601 which was enacted in 1992 during the time of then-President Corazon Aquino.

Javier served as governor of Antique from 1971 to 1980. He ran for the position of assemblyman in 1984 but was cheated of victory. He was shot to death in February 1986 by four masked gunmen. Javier’s murder came at a critical junction in Philippine history. It happened four days after the snap elections pitting Ferdinand Marcos against Mrs. Aquino.

Javier is in the camp of Aquino while his political foe Arturo Pacificador sided with Marcos. In 2002, the Supreme Court affirmed the conviction of Pacificador’s bodyguards in connection with the case. Meanwhile, Javier’s widow Preciosa died of cancer in the United States August last year.
