Dulaang UP presents ‘Adarna’

Dulaang UP (DUP), the official performing group for theater of the University of the Philippines, opens its 38th theatrical season this July with Adarna, a popular Spanish-era epic and one of the canons of Philippine literature.

Adarna, whose author remains unknown, centers on Don Juan, the youngest of three princes who searched far and wide to find the elusive Ibong Adarna. The magical bird is said to be the only cure for their father, the King of Berbanya, who is suffering from a debilitating illness. Making Don Juan’s journey more complex are incessant challenges that tested his strength and character.

Adarna is adapted for the stage by Vlad Gonzales; set and lights design by Lex Marcos; puppetry by Don Salubayba; costume design by Brenda Fajardo; music and musical direction by Jeff Hernandez; under the direction of José Estrella,” DUP said on a statement. Estrella also directed the highly successful Umaaraw, Umuulan Kinakasal ang Tikbalang stage play last year.

“This reimagining of this oft-told tale through a multimedia theatrical presentation blurs the distinctions between family dispute and love, home and faraway lands, and magical dreams and grim realities,” the group added.

Started by multi-awarded actor and director Antonio Mabesa in 1976, DUP aims to “stage original and translated versions of classics by master playwrights as well as mounting powerful and incisive masterworks by professional and promising Filipino playwrights.”

Adarna runs from July 17 to August 1, 2013 (7pm during Wednesdays and Fridays and 10am and 3pm during Saturdays and Sundays), and July 26 at 2pm. All shows will be in the Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theater in UP Diliman.

Contact the Dulaang UP Office at 926-1349, 981-8500 local 2449 or 433-7840 for sponsorship and ticket inquiries.

  1. I’ll immediately grasp your rss feed as I can not find your e-mail subscription hyperlink or e-newsletter service. Do you have any? Please let me recognise in order that I could subscribe. Thanks.|

  2. Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.
