June 24 2013 Manila holiday

The City of Manila will be marking its 442nd Foundation Day this June 24, Monday. The day, more popularly known as Araw ng Maynila, is a special non-working holiday in the Philippine capital city by virtue of Proclamation 604. President Benigno Aquino III signed the declaration last June 13. Read the full text of Proclamation 604 here.

As noted in a post last year, Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, the first Spanish governor-general of the Philippines, proclaimed Manila as the capital city of the country in June 24, 1571, calling it a “distinguished and ever loyal city.” Quezon City, situated north of Manila, briefly became the nation’s capital city from 1948 to 1972.

June 24 is also the feast day of Saint John the Baptist, the patron saint of San Juan City. During the annual Wattah Wattah festival, residents of San Juan douse water not only to their neighbors but to just about anyone. Stay dry!

  1. I was born and raised in Manila. It is a city very close to my heart. Back in the days, it was a very beautiful city. Clean, peaceful and lovely.

That’s why it hurts my heart to see the current situation of Manila. There is garbage everywhere. The crime rates are sky-high. The pollution is bad.

I want it to regain its former glory. I am willing to do anything as a citizen to put a stop to its misery.

Recently, former president and now would-be mayor of Manila, Erap Estrada, appointed the infamous Carlos Celdran as Tourism Consultant of Manila. The name Carlos Celdran bothers me; let alone the fact that he would be handling the fate of Manila in his hands.

“..we bet you’ll really be handy when it comes to giving Mayor Estrada advise about city planning. I mean, you know, imagine telling him about “gentrification” and working on behalf of the Ayalas to whisper to Estrada to stop the projects of its rivals. Moreover, we can imagine you telling Estrada also that he ought to clamp down on the Central Bank of Binondo because, seriously, that entire place smells to high heavens of sewerage.”
