And now it can be told.
With just two weeks left before the highly-anticipated Master All-Star Game Face Challenge on June 21, basketball superstars Chris Tiu and Marc Pingris have already announced the names of players that will take part in the friendly match.
Both “Team Chris” and “Team Marc” will feature amateur players from UAAP and NCAA as well as professional hoopsters from PBA.
Pingris, power forward for San Mig Coffee (SMC) Mixers and Tiu, point guard for Rain or Shine Elastopainters, frequently bantered with each other throughout the event.
At one point, Tiu said he’ll use the upcoming all-star game to get even with Pingris, whose team defeated the Elastopainters during the PBA Philippine Cup finals series last February. Tiu and Pingris used to be teammates in the Gilas Pilipinas national basketball team.
The “draft” was held in the SM Mall of Asia Arena’s Music Hall late Saturday afternoon. The event was hosted by Jason Webb, himself a former player turned game commentator.
Tiu is tapping the services of Gilas Pilipinas players Ranidel de Ocampo of Talk N’ Text (TNT), Jeff Chan (RoS), and Jimmy Alapag (TNT). He also enlisted Meralco players Mike Cortez, Cliff Hodge, as well as his RoS teammate Alex Nuyles.
Pingris for his part will be assisted by his SMC teammate Mark Barroca, Gary David, Paul Artadi, and Jared Dillinger from Meralco, Larry Fonacier from TNT, and Jeric Teng of RoS.
Rounding up the roster of players for the two competing squads are the following amateur stars:
Jeron Teng (De La Salle)
Chris Newsome (Ateneo de Manila)
Mike Tolomia (FEU)
Kevin Ferrer (UST)
Zach Nicholls (Arellano)
Mark Cruz (Letran)
Rome Dela Rosa (San Beda)
André Paras (UP/San Beda)
Jericho Cruz (Adamson)
Roi Sumang (UE)
Jeoff Javillonar (NU)
Baser Amer (San Beda)
Kevin Racal (Letran)
Josan Nimes (Mapua)
Before the show ended, it was also announced that NBA superstar Kevin Love of the Minnesota Timberwolves will fly to the country for the upcoming event. Unfortunately for Tiu and Pingris, they can’t have Love on their respective lineups. 😉
Curiously, the game will also mark the first time that the Teng brothers will play against one another since the Green Archers triumphed over the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers in last year’s UAAP finals.
While Jeron still has two years to play as an amateur, his older brother Jeric is now playing in the PBA. Will Jeron repeat over his brother, or will Jeric avenge last year’s loss?
