July 23 2014 declared a holiday in Batangas

The Philippines will be marking the 150th birth anniversary of hero and revolutionary Apolinario Mabini this coming July 23, Wednesday.

The day is a special non-working holiday throughout Batangas, Mabini’s home province, according to a proclamation issued last July 7 by the office of Governor Vilma Santos-Recto.

In her proclamation, the governor’s office noted that the tradition of declaring July 23 annually as a holiday for Batangas began in 1984 during the term of then-President Ferdinand Marcos (check this link for Marcos’ Proclamation 2367).

PS: Given the prominent role that Mabini played in the country’s history, it is very disappointing to note that the National Historical Commission of the Philippines has not been able to really promote the upcoming momentous occasion through activities meant not just for those in the academia but for the general public as well (see their Facebook page to see for yourself).

In contrast, the Batangas City government has outlined a long list of activities for this year’s Mabini Day, which also coincides with the city’s 45th foundation day anniversary. Check this link for reference.
