August 19 2014 – Quezon City Day holiday

The country will be commemorating the 136th birth anniversary of Manuel L. Quezon this coming August 19, 2014, Tuesday.  Quezon served as the president of the Philippines from 1935 until his death in 1944.

August 19 will be a special non-working holiday in the provinces of Aurora and Quezon as well as in Quezon City as mandated by Republic Act 6741. It is a working holiday in the rest of the Philippines.

The law took effect during the term of the late President Corazon Aquino. Read the full text of RA 6741 in this link.

Quezon over-all is the second president of the Philippines. He is also the first president of the American-sponsored Commonwealth Republic, which existed from 1935 to 1946.

Quezon effectively ceded direct control of the national government when he left the country at the start of World War II. Jose P. Laurel, Quezon’s justice minister, became president of the Japanese-sponsored “puppet” government that was established in 1943.

As noted in a previous post, the late president has been immortalized through Quezon City and Quezon. Meanwhile, the province of Aurora was named in his wife’s honor (she was killed in an ambush in 1949).

Interestingly, Quezon City was established and named as such in 1939, during Quezon’s first presidential term. Is this an early form of politicians engaged in “epal”? Activist Carlos Celdran agrees. 😀

PS: The residents of the aforementioned territories will have two more holidays before the current month ends: August 21 (Ninoy Aquino Day) and August 25 (National Heroes Day).
