Mariah Carey live in Manila – October 28 2014

American music superstar Mariah Carey is heading back to the Philippines for the first time in 11 years as part of the Asian leg of her “Me, I am Mariah … The Elusive Chanteuse” world tour.

In a post made on her official website, it was announced that she will have her concert this October 28, 2014 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena. Tickets will be on sale beginning this August 14.

Before coming to the Philippines, Carey will do shows in Japan, China, and Singapore. A possible show in Malaysia is also being scheduled.

Malaysian news outlet The Star Online mentioned that Carey will be doing a concert in the Philippines as early as August 1, or a week before the singer’s camp verified it.

The Star speculated that Carey may be commanding $1 million or more for her performance,  which is also said to be her talent fee ten years or so ago.

In other words, expect ticket prices to be very high, perhaps as expensive to that of One Direction (read: P17,000). This is Mariah Carey, after all.

As noted above, Carey last had a one-night concert in the Philippines in November 2003 as part of her Charmbracelet World Tour. Carey performed at the Bonifacio Global City Open Field in Taguig City.

Although Carey’s entourage had a misunderstanding with Ninoy Aquino International Airport general manager Ed Manda when they arrived, the concert itself went smoothly, with an estimated crowd of 35,000 attending.

After which, Carey famously went to the exclusive island-resort of Amanpulo in Palawan and stayed there for five days.

Despite the success of her 2003 concert, Carey did not include the Philippines in her 2006 Adventures of Mimi international concert tour, although if it’s any consolation, Japan is the only country she visited in Asia.

While writing this blog post, The Filipino Scribe came across this thread from PinoyExchange that was started by a user who introduced himself/herself as someone connected to a concert promoting firm. It seems that Carey could’ve returned here in 2006 but for some reason, it didn’t push through.

PS: Carey undoubtedly retains a very strong fan base here in the Philippines. Her critics in North America and Europe can deride her as an aging diva all they want but her Filipino fans will remain loyal for the years to come.

Admit it or not, Carey’s influence is very evident in the musical style of Filipina singers including Regine Velasquez, Sarah Geronimo, Charice Pempengco, to name a few.

If I am among her handlers, she should do a concert here as frequently as possible. Ticket sales won’t EVER be a problem.

  1. I guess she would have to recall how she was racist to have asked Filipinos to leave from her concert shouting at them to ‘Get Out!!!’ apparently after they simply acknowledged her call…come to think of that….she won’t be safe to watch for.
