November 27 2014 declared a holiday in Tarlac
The 82nd birth anniversary of former Senator Benigno Aquino Jr., martyr of democracy and father of current President Benigno Aquino III, will be commemorated this November 27, Thursday.
November 27 of each year is a special non-working public holiday in Tarlac through Republic Act (RA) 8151. It took effect in 1995, during the time of then-President Fidel V. Ramos. Read the full text of RA 8151 in this link.
Ramos, of course, won the presidency after getting the endorsement of Ninoy’s widow, then-President Corazon Aquino, in 1992.
As The Filipino Scribe noted last year, this “Ninoy Aquino Day” holiday is different from the one being marked nationwide every August 21, the day the former senator was assassinated upon his return to the Philippines.
Aquino came from a clan of politicians. His grandfather Servillano was part of the Malolos Congress during the term of Emilio Aguinaldo, the country’s first president.
His father and namesake, Benigno Sr., served as one of Tarlac’s district representatives before becoming the Speaker of the National Assembly during the Japanese period.
Ninoy, for his part, also dabbled in politics at a young age. He became mayor of his home town at 22, then Tarlac’s vice governor at 27, and its governor at 29. He made history by being the youngest person to be elected Senator at age 34 in 1967.
