Class suspensions for November 28 2014 – Tropical depression ‘Queenie’ update
Even if it is already moving out of the Philippines, tropical depression “Queenie” is still affecting parts of Western Visayas and the province of Palawan as of Thursday night.
In its final weather bulletin for November 27 (read the report here), the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration placed Palawan (including the Calamian Group of Islands and Cuyo Islands) as well as Guimaras, Iloilo, and Antique under public storm warning signal #1.
These provinces will experience winds of 30-60 kph for the next 36 hours. Meanwhile, the storm warnings previously raised in Central Visayas and Northern Mindanao has already been lifted.
“Queenie” continues to have maximum sustained winds of 55 kph near the center and is moving west northwest at 24 kph. “By tomorrow evening, “Queenie” is expected to be at 400 km West Northwest of Puerto Princesa City, and will exit the western border of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) in between 7 to 8 PM. By Saturday evening, it is expected to be at 1,070 km West Northwest of Puerto Princesa City.” the weather bureau reported.
PAGASA stressed that fisherfolks and those using small seacrafts should not venture out over the seaboards of Palawan and over the western seaboard of Visayas while “Queenie” is still within Philippine area of responsibility.
As stipulated in President Benigno Aquino III’s Executive Order No. 66 (2012), classes at the preschool level in areas under signal #1 are automatically suspended.
As has been reported time and again, the same executive order gives local chief executives like governors and mayors the right to suspend classes in their respective constituencies especially if their community is flood prone or high risk.
