International theater superstar Lea Salonga took to Twitter Saturday night to say that Darren Espanto deserved to top The Voice Kids (TVK) competition. Salonga made the comment while sharing a video to a recent performance of Espanto with his former contest mentor Sarah Geronimo.
The Canadian-born Darren placed second to Lyca Gairanod when the competition concluded last July.
Responding to a Twitter user who said that Lyca might feel bad because of her remarks, the singer explained: “It’s not that she isn’t good. She is naman. But he (Darren) just continues to impress me as a singer and as a human being.”
She said she’s very proud of Darren, saying “That kid is going places.”
The Tony Award-winning actress also said that she regrets not turning-around for Darren during the TVK’s blind auditions. This is a repeat of what she said last month when a contestant sang “Domino” again for the blind auditions.
You can watch that episode below:
Despite describing Darren as a “very smart” singer, Salonga said in the 1:23 mark of the video that she’s “not quite ready yet” to turn-around for the 13-year old kid.
During the succeeding #AskCoachLea anything session, the theater superstar strongly denied rumors that this is her last season as part of The Voice Philippines. She also said that her long-awaited third movie with her 1990s screen partner Aga Muhlach might be delayed until 2016.
She also expressed wariness about doing meet-and-greet events with her fans, saying that she doesn’t trust who will eventually show up if and when she organizes one.
