Millions of Filipino Catholics are expected to troop to the City of Manila this January 9 to take part in the annual Feast of the Black Nazarene, which is housed in the famous Quiapo Church, whose formal name is Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Espiritu ng Mahal na Poong Nazareno: Awa at Malasakit ng Abang Simbahan.”

The flurry of activities will begin in the afternoon of January 8, when the icon of the Black Nazarene will be transported from Quiapo Church to Quirino Grandstand.  This is expected to happen at around 1PM.

From then, the devotees will be allowed to fall in line and kiss the statue of the Black Nazarene (referred to in Filipino as “pahalik“).  Later that day, several priests and prelates will take turns in addressing the crowd during the vigil, which is scheduled to last until the midnight.

The Metro Manila Development Authority has released the route to be followed during the procession of the Black Nazarene this January 9

Instead of doing it shortly after sunrise, the traditional mass for the feast will be done in the midnight of January 9. It will be officiated by Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, who is also the Archbishop of Manila.

The procession or traslacion is projected to begin around 6AM, and will most likely last until late that night, or during the wee hours of January 10.

According to the Metro Manila Development Authority’s Facebook page,  the procession will pass by Katigbak Drive through P. Burgos Street from its starting point in Quirino Grandstand.
Then, the procession will proceed to Taft Avenue through Jones Bridge before turning right to Escolta Street. Authorities has been urging Black Nazarene devotees to use this bridge instead of the  MacArthur Bridge because of the latter’s structural instability.

From there, the traslacion will head to Carlos Palanca Street via Quezon Bridge before going to Quezon Boulevard and Arlegui Street. The procession of the Black Nazarene will also pass by Fraternal, Vergara, Duque de Alba, Castillejos, and Farnecio streets before returning to Arlegui on its way to Nepomuceno, Aguila, and Carcer streets.
It well then go to Hidalgo through Plaza Del Carmen and Bilibid Viejo through Gil Puyat. Take note that the procession will stop briefly in San Sebastian Church for the recently-revived tradition of “pagdungaw,” where the Our Lady of Mount Carmel will have the chance to “look” at Her son Jesus.
In the remainder of the procession, the Black Nazarene  will pass by Guzman, Hidalgo, and Barbosa streets before proceeding to Globo de Oro through Quezon Bridge. The image will then pass by Palanca Street and Villalobos through Plaza Miranda before it finally reaches the Quiapo Church.
The activities related to the feast has noticeably been moved earlier so that the procession won’t last as long as it did  last year, when it took 19 hours before the statue found its way back to its home church.
