January 23 2015 declared a holiday in Bulacan

The Philippines will mark this coming January 23 2015 the 116th anniversary of the inauguration of the Malolos Republic at the historic Barosoain Church.

This day, which this year falls on a Friday, has been declared a special non-working holiday in the province of Bulacan by virtue of Proclamation 944. Read the full text of Proclamation 944 here.

This holiday holiday in effect gives Bulakenyos a three-day weekend. Curiously, this particular holiday is not included in the 2007 Administrative Code of Bulacan.

The Malolos Republic carries much historical significance since it is often regarded as the first Republic established throughout Asia.

One of Bulacan’s representatives at the Lower House recently made a proposal to have declaring January 23 of every year as a holiday throughout the country.

“The significance of 23 January 1899 is the First Philippine Republic came into being as the sovereign choice of the people. It is a conscious choice to reject dictatorial and revolutionary government and establish for all the future Filipino generations the groundwork for democracy,” Re. Ma. Victoria Sy-Alvarado said.

The Philippine Star reported last year that Chief Justice Ma. Lourdes Sereno is in favor of this proposal.
