ARAW NG DABAW – March 16 2015 declared a holiday in Davao City

Davao City will be having its 79th foundation anniversary this coming March 16, Monday. The day is a special non-working holiday throughout the city according to Republic Act (RA) 7551. This holiday effectively gives those working and studying in Davao City a three-day weekend.

Enacted in 1992 during the term of then-President Corazon Aquino, RA 7551 states that officials of Davao City “shall lead appropriate and meaningful celebrations and activities participated in by officials and employees of the national government agencies or instrumentalities, civic, religious and non-government organizations, and private companies” which are based there. RA 7551 can be read in full in this link.

The city government under Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has lined up a long list of activities for the coming event. The sports fest will be kicking off this March 6 while the annual “Mutya ng Dabaw” is another event worth looking forward to.

Now referred to as the “crown jewel of Mindanao” because of its centrality in the economic life of the region, Davao City was formally established in 1936 when Romualdo Quimpo, one of the region’s district representatives during the Commonwealth period, filed Bill Number 609 which created the City of Davao by merging the town of Davao (Mayo) and Guianga District.

Davao was inaugurated as a chartered city by President Manuel Quezon on October 16, 1936. The charter of Davao City is contained in Commonwealth Act #51.
