August 31 2015 declared a national holiday
The country will be celebrating the National Heroes Day or Araw ng mga Bayani this August 31, Monday.
The day is a regular holiday all over the Philippines as indicated in President Benigno Aquino III’s Proclamation 831, which was released July last year. This holiday effectively gives most students and employees their second three-day weekend this month. The first one is due to the Ninoy Aquino Day on August 21.
Having an annual National Heroes Day was first mandated by Commonwealth Act. 3827 of 1931. According to the act, it needs to be celebrated every last Sunday of August.
That continued until 2007, when then-President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo signed Republic Act 9492 which moved the celebration of the Araw ng mga Bayani to the last Monday of August in line with her so-called “holiday economics” program.
The last week of August is very significant in Philippine history because it is during this time in 1896 that Andres Bonifacio and members of the Katipunan launched an armed revolution against the ruling Spanish colonizers. It took nearly two years before the Spaniards were finally ousted although Filipinos’ victory ultimately proved to be short-lived because of the arrival of American imperialists.
