Actress Sheryl Cruz: Cousin Grace Poe’s ‘not yet ready’ to be president

In a revealing interview with Manila Standard Today (MST), actress Sheryl Cruz said she thinks her cousin, Senator Grace Poe, is not yet ready for the task of becoming the country’s president.

“She’s not yet ready for the task, for the big responsibility… You don’t want to see somebody having a hard time most especially running the country,” Cruz said, as reported by MST‘s John Paolo Bencito. “I know her because we grew up together. There are some things you cannot rush and you have to actually wait for,” she added.

The actress added that while she believes that Poe is a fine public servant, the presidency can be better handled by someone more experienced. “I know she’ll be very good in what she’s doing, but just not right now. Probably in 2022,” Cruz said.

Cruz is a daughter of former actress Rosemarie Sonora, who in turn is the younger sister of Susan Roces (Jesusa Sonora in real-life). The actress also took the opportunity to ask her cousin’s political opponents to stop spreading the rumors that the two of them are half-sisters.

“Me and my brother, who lives here in the Philippines, are very much affected. Manang Grace and I are not sisters. My Mama is not her mother. Please spare my mom from all these lies,” she said. According to long-running rumors, Poe is actually the lovechild of Sonora and former President Ferdinand Marcos.

Poe declared her candidacy for president last Wednesday at the University of the Philippines-Diliman. Her team-up with running-mate Senator Francis Escudero was formally announced the following day at Club Filipino. They will lead a political coalition dubbed “Partido Pilipinas” with a complete senatorial slate, according to the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
