FIBA ASIA CHAMPIONSHIPS 2015 | Palestine upsets Gilas Pilipinas, 73-75
Palestine stunned Gilas Pilipinas with a come-from-behind win in the opening game of the 2015 FIBA-Asia Championships in Changsha, China, 75-73. The Nationals squandered a seven-point lead in the last two minutes en route to the heartbreaking loss.
Gilas Pilipinas were ahead for much of the game, leading by as high as 15 during the first half and by 12 in the opening minutes of the third quarter. Nevertheless, the Palestinians were able to claw their way back into the game each time the Nationals tried to pull away.
The Philippine team still had a chance to force overtime with 15.8 seconds left in the game but no one from their side was able to connect. Interestingly, it is the first time for Palestine to compete in the FIBA-Asia championships while the Philippines made it to the finals in 2013 before losing to Iran.
Although it is an embarrassing start in their quest for a slot in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Gilas Pilipinas can still advance to the next round if they defeat Hong Kong tomorrow morning and Kuwait on Friday afternoon. Once more, the Philippines is heavily favored to win against both teams.
