Will Cayetano be Duterte’s running mate for 2016?
Senator Alan Peter Cayetano has announced his vice presidential bid for the May 2016 elections. The senator made the declaration in a press conference in Davao City Tuesday afternoon.
Cayetano’s choice of location for his announcement is revealing since the city’s mayor, Rodrigo Duterte, is being considered a leading presidential contender. Duterte has earlier announced that he is retiring from politics although he now appears to be making a U-turn following a show of force by his supporters over the weekend.
Speaking to GMA News Online, a source close to Cayetano hinted that the senator will be Duterte’s running-mate. “We need [a] strong president who can change the country,” the source said.
Cayetano’s pronouncement does not as a surprise since he has long been vocal about his aspirations for higher office. In fact, he originally wanted to run for president until early this month when he said he is only seeking the vice presidency, presumably because of low polling numbers.
Prior to being elected senator in 2007, Cayetano served as a municipal councilor from 1995 to 1998 for Taguig. He went on to serve in the House of Representatives from 1998 to 2007. He was reelected senator in 2013, garnering the third highest number of votes behind Grace Poe and Loren Legarda.

Most probably Cayetano will run as independent. Duterte will not run. Cayetano like Trillanes are members of the Nationalista Party. Nationalista party is currently aligned with the administration.
