The Philippines will be commemorating the 31st death anniversary of the late Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aguino Jr. this coming August 21, Thursday. This is in accordance to Republic Act (RA) 9265, which then-President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo signed in 2004. Access RA 9256 in this link.

Citing RA 9265, current President Benigno Aquino III (and Ninoy’s only son) listed August 21, 2014 as one of the legal holidays for 2014 through Proclamation 655. Read more about Proclamation 655 here.

NINOY AQUINO DAY: August 21 2014 is a special non-working in the Philippines

This year’s Ninoy Aquino Day celebration comes three weeks after the Eid’l Fitr holiday and just four days before the National Heroes’ Day (to be observed on August 25, 2014).

For residents of Aurora and Quezon provinces as well as Quezon City, this holiday comes just two days after their own local holiday (Quezon Day).

The late senator is now basking in the image of heroism, but many profound questions linger. For one, the mastermind behind his assassination remains undetermined conclusively. Even the exact circumstance behind his death is still being debated.

With less than two years left in his son’s presidential term, when will his murder be solved? Unfortunately one possible missing link, Air Force Sgt. Pablo Martinez, died last May after getting hit by a private vehicle.
