September 9 2014 Osmena Day holiday in Cebu

Filipinos nationwide, particular the Cebuanos, will mark the 136th birth anniversary of the late President Sergio Osmena Sr. this September 9, Friday.

It is a special non-working holiday in the province of Cebu and its component cities as mandated by Republic Act (RA) 6953. The day meanwhile is a special working holiday in the rest of the country.

RA 6953 was signed into law by then-President Corazon Aquino in May 1990. Click here to read the full text of RA 6953.

September 9 2014 is a holiday in Cebu in connection to former President Sergio Osmena’s birth anniversary

Born in 1878, Osmena is the first of two Visayans to ascend to the presidency, the other one being Carlos P. Garcia (he served from 1961 to 1965).

Prior to his brief tenure in the presidency (1944 to 1946), the Osmena patriarch served as a provincial governor, House speaker, senator, and vice president.

His four-decade long political career ended when he was defeated by then-Senate President Manuel Roxas in the 1946 presidential elections. While Roxas died just two years into his term, Osmena lived until 1961.

Since then, several members of the Osmena clan have occupied positions at the national and local levels.

Osmena’s son Sergio II or “Serging” unsuccessfully ran against then-President Ferdinand Marcos in 1969 while Lito Osmena failed in his vice presidential and presidential bids in 1992 and 1998, respectively.

At present, Sergio Osmena III is serving his third non-consecutive term in the Senate and is up for reelection in 2016. Meanwhile, his brother Tomas last year lost his bid to return as the mayor of Cebu City (he held the post from 2001 to 2010).
