Typhoon Seniang?
With tropical depression “Ruby” now moving out of the Philippine area of responsibility, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) is now turning its attention on a weather system about 2000 kilometers away from the country that may eventually develop into a low pressure area.
If it further develops into a tropical cyclone, it will be called “Seniang” upon reaching the Philippines.

In an interview with Interaksyon.com, state weather forecaster Glaiza Escullar nevertheless reiterated that the cloud cluster is still very far away from the country and does not pose a threat anytime soon.
That is a far cry from the statement yesterday of Dr. Landrico U. Dalida Jr., PAGASA’s officer-in-charge, who readily speculated that the potential cyclone may follow the path of “Ruby” on its way to Northern Luzon.
There are only three weeks left before 2014 comes to a close, but PAGASA raised the possibility of two more cyclones entering the country’s territory. This situation is not at all unprecedented.
It can be recalled that in 2011, Tropical Storm Sendong ravaged northern Mindanao particularly Cagayan de Oro City just a week before the Christmas holidays.
For now, it will be prudent for people to not believe in rumors being circulated in certain blogs and social networking sites. While it is never a bad thing to be overly prepared for a coming typhoon (which worked well in dealing with “Ruby”), fear-mongering not based on anything factual is not helping the public in any way.
