January 15, 16, and 19 2015 declared as holidays in Metro Manila
President Benigno Aquino III has declared January 15 (Thursday), 16 (Friday), and 19 (Monday) as special non-working days throughout Metro Manila.
This is stipulated in Proclamation 936, which was posted December 23. Read the full text of the announcement here.
Pope Francis will be in the country for an apostolic visit during those days, and as mentioned in a previous post, he is scheduled to spend most of his time in the National Capital Region.
The Argentinian pontiff will be arriving afternoon of January 15. The following morning, he will be paying a courtesy call to the President at the Malacanang Palace.
By afternoon, the Pope will officiate a mass in the Manila Cathedral with selected bishops, priests, and members of the laity. That night, he will take part in the Encounter with Families at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
His last two public activities will be on January 18. It is the Encounter with the Youth to be held at the University of Santo Tomas and the Concluding Mass at the Quirino Grandstand. He will fly back to Rome the following day.
Mayor Joseph Estrada three weeks ago declared January 15 to 19 as no-class days for all levels at the City of Manila. He also announced work suspensions for city government offices on those dates.
As reported previously by The Filipino Scribe, this does not include employees involved in the maintenance of peace and order (e.g. police officials and traffic enforcers), disaster and risk management, as well as health and sanitation.
