January 17 2015 special non-working holiday in Manila
Today, January 14, is officially the last working day for the week.
In can be remembered that President Benigno Aquino III last month declared January 15, 16, and 19 as special non-working days throughout the National Capital Region as Pope Francis goes on a five-day visit to the country.
Some are now asking about January 17 and 18, which falls on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
As it stands now, the two dates are declared holidays only in the City of Manila. Former president and Mayor Joseph Estrada made the announcement three weeks before Aquino’s proclamation was released.
The President perhaps didn’t include the two days in his announcement for two reasons. First, Pope Francis will be spending the whole day of January 17 at Palo and Tacloban, Leyte and not in Metro Manila.
And, the administration perhaps also thought that including January 17 and 18 in the holiday proclamation is no longer necessary since they fall on a weekend.
Such thinking does not take into considerations students who have Saturday classes and employees who are required to work during weekends, especially those in the business process outsourcing industry.
