KADAUGAN SA MACTAN | April 27 2015 declared a holiday in Lapu-Lapu City

Residents of Lapu-Lapu City in Cebu will have a three-day weekend just before April ends as the country marks the 494th anniversary of the Battle of Mactan this April 27, Monday. The event is known locally as Kadaugan sa Mactan.

President Benigno Aquino III made the announcement through Proclamation 990, which was posted last March 31. Read the full text of the proclamation here.

The proclamation notes that the Battle of Mactan is “among the significant events in Philippine history and serves as testimony to the rich cultural and historical heritage of the Filipinos.”

The Battle of Mactan is now regarded as the Filipinos’ first battle for independence from a foreign power, perhaps the first of its kind in this side of the globe. Parenthetically, this also earned for Lapu-Lapu the distinction of being the first Filipino hero.
