June 24 2015 declared a holiday in Manila

Manila, the capital city of the Philippines, will be celebrating its 444th foundation anniversary (locally referred to as Araw ng Maynila) this June 24, Wednesday.

The day has been declared a special non-working holiday in the city through Proclamation 1029, which Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa signed in behalf of President Benigno Aquino III last May 21. The full text of the said proclamation can be read here.

It was in June 24, 1571 when Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, the country’s first Spanish governor-general, declared Manila as the capital city of the country. He also famously described Manila as a “distinguished and ever loyal city.”

On another note, the political scene in Manila appears to be getting a lot more interesting ahead of the 2016 elections. Former president and current Mayor Joseph Estrada has announced his intention to seek another term next year, contrary to his initial vow to step down after three years.

Some of Estrada’s policies had been controversial, including the so-called bus and track bans. In other words, Estrada can be politically vulnerable though it remains unclear who will challenge him.

Meanwhile, Vice Mayor Isko Moreno is said to be eyeing a possible run for the Senate since he is already on his third term. In that case, Estrada will have to choose a new running-mate. One possible choice can be Rep. Trisha Bonoan-David of District IV, which covers the populous Sampaloc district.
