Ateneo Entablado presents ‘Gulo ng Gugulong na Ulo’
Ateneo ENTABLADO (ENterteynment para sa TAo, Bayan, LAnsangan at DiyOs) begins their 33rd theatrical season with a homage to Severino Reyes, one of the most iconic playwrights in Philippine history who did his masterpieces under the pen name “Lola Basyang.”
This July 2016, the group will be staging “Gulo ng Gugulong na Ulo,” a play based on “Ang Sultan Saif” and “Ang Haring Malupit,” two stories included in Reyes’ famous anthology “Mga Kwento ni Lola Basyang.”
The play, written by Jerome D. Ignacio and directed by Jethro Tenorio, focuses on good governance, a very timely subject especially with the upcoming 2016 national and local elections. “Gulo ng Gugulong na Ulo” highlights the need for the public to be more discerning in choosing their leaders.
Both “Ang Sultan Saif” and “Ang Haring Malupit” centers on a leader that is widely opposed because of his questionable leadership style and lack of wisdom in settling disputes among his people.
Ateneo ENTABLADO is the premier sociopolitical theater organization of the Ateneo de Manila University. The group aims to use theater to make not just members of the Ateneo community but the public in general more aware of the current political, economic, and cultural issues affecting the country.
For its 33rd season, the theater group aims to help its viewers “understand the state of society and engage in discourse to be able to traverse the path towards national peace.”
The show will run from July 1 to 5 and from July 8 to 11, 7 pm, at the Black Box Theater, Ateneo De Manila University. For July 4 and 11, the play will be shown at 1:00 PM and 3:30 PM.
