Dulaang UP presents Shakespeare’s ‘King Lear’ this October

Dulaang UP’s homage to William Shakespeare continues as the group presents “King Lear” this month, with a Filipino version “Haring Lear” courtesy of Nicolas Pichay. It is one of the greatest masterpieces of the said 17th century English playwright, with no less than Irish culture critic George Bernard Shaw declaring that “no man will ever write a better tragedy than King Lear.”

This will be the group’s second offering for their 40th theatrical season, which began last August with “R</3J.” It will be directed by Tony Mabesa, DUP’s founding artistic director and a professor emeritus at the UP Department of Speech Communication and Theater Arts.

In a press release, DUP explained that “the play is set in the waning years of a Southeast Asian kingdom replete with appropriate music, movement, costumes, and properties of the region without losing the themes, images, and poetry of (Shakespeare)’s supreme achievement.”

The play, the group added, will show to theater-goers “how deceit and the love for the superficial can tragically bring families to ruin and great kingdoms to ashes.”

A mix of theater veterans and newcomers are included in the cast led by Joel Lamangan and Leo Rialp for the title character alongside Jojo Cayabyab, Brian Sy, Guelan Luarca, Ian Ignacio, Carlo Tarobal, Frances Makil-Ignacio, Micaela Pineda, Martha Comia, Astarte Abraham, Jacques Borlaza, Jeremy Domingo, Allan Palileo, Francis Mata, Tarek El Tayech, Joseph Dela Cruz, Arvin Trinidad, Ron Binas, Patrick Ortaliza, Liway Gabo, and the Dulaang UP Ensemble.

The artistic staff is composed of Ohm David (set design), Eric Pineda (costume design), Meliton Roxas Jr. (technical direction and lighting design), Jethro Joaquin (sounds design), Arnel Paguyo (property design), Jeremy Dela Cruz (movement & choreography), Patrick Ortaliza and Juan Gonzales (dramaturgy), Dino Dimar (poster), Patricia Balboa (photography) and John Mark Yap (assistant direction).
