PAGASA: Storm surges likely as Typhoon Nona nears Bicol region
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration or PAGASA warned of possible storm surges in several provinces in Bicol Region and Eastern Visayas as Typhoon Nona (international name “Melor”) moved closer to the country.
In a public advisory released Monday midnight, the state weather bureau identified the following areas as vulnerable to storm surges that can be as high as 3.5 meters:
UP TO 3.5 METERS
Samar Province (Catbalogan City, Tarangnan, Pagsanghan, Jiabong, Paranas, Motiong)
UP TO 2.5 METERS
– Samar Province (Santa Margarita, Calbayog)
UP TO 1.5 METERS
– Northern Samar (Allen, Lavezares)
UP TO 1.o METER
– Eastern Samar (Arteche, San Policarpio)
– Northern Samar (Bobon, Capul, Catarman, Mondragon, Lawang, Pambujam, San Jose, Rosario, Gamay, Lapinig, Mapanas, Palapag, San Isidro, San Roque, Victoria, Biri, San Vicente)
– Masbate (Batuan)
– Sorsogon (Barcelona, Bulusan, Gubat, Matnog, Santa Magdalena, Irosin)
– Samar Province (Almagro, Santo Nino, Tagapul-An)
In a separate weather bulletin issued 11:00 PM of Sunday, PAGASA reported that “Nona” now carries maximum sustained winds of 150 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 185 kph. It is moving west at 19 kilometers per hour.
“Nona” was last located at 310 km East of Catarman, Northern Samar (12.3°N, 127.6°E). It is projected to be in the vicinity of Donsol, Sorsogon Monday evening before proceeding to Mindoro the following night.
