Class suspensions for December 17 2015 due to tropical storm ‘Nona’
Classes in some areas will remain suspended for tomorrow, December 17, despite the weakening of “Nona” into a severe tropical storm (international name “Melor”).
In a storm bulletin released late Wednesday night, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) noted that apart from losing strength, “Nona” also changed course. Instead of going southwest to Palawan as projected initially, the tropical storm is now headed to Northern Luzon.
Based on the bulletin, “Nona” was last spotted at 75 km west of Iba, Zambales (15.4°N, 119.3°E). It carries maximum sustained winds of 85 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 100 kph. It is moving northward at 8 kph.
It is expected to revert to being a low pressure area once it comes to the vicinity of Aparri, Cagayan by Friday night. Only the provinces of Zambales and Pangasinan are under signal #1, while storm signals raised in other areas has already been lifted.
Nevertheless, some local government units have announced class suspensions in their respective areas because of torrential rains and to deal with the devastation caused by “Onyok.”
