Duterte overwhelmingly wins 7/11 mock poll
Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is the runaway winner of “7-Elections,” the mock presidential poll conducted in 1,650 7/11 convenience store outlets nationwide that ran from March up until last week. During the two-month period, customers of the said convenience store were given the chance to buy their drinks using “7-election cups” bearing the faces of each of the five presidential candidates.
Duterte is the preferred presidential candidate of 53% of the company’s customers, followed by Senator Grace Poe (10%), Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago (8%), Vice President Jejomar Binay (7%) and former Interior Secretary Mar Roxas (5%). The company didn’t release exact figures of cups sold for each candidate.
Nearly a fifth of the customers or 17% considered themselves undecided. The company has repeatedly stressed that the count-the-cups poll is not scientific and statistically valid, Duterte’s dominance mirror his status as the likely winner in today’s presidential elections as reflected in the final pre-election surveys of different pollsters.
This exercise began in the United States during the 2000 presidential elections, where 7/11 customers correctly predicted the narrow win of then-Texas Governor George W. Bush over then-Vice President Al Gore. As CNN notes, the poll has went on to correctly predict the outcome of the three succeeding presidential elections.
This is the second time 7/11 did the “7-Elections” in the country. The first one was six years ago when it correctly predicted the landslide victory of then-Senator Benigno Aquino III over his rivals.
