Voter registration for SK, barangay elections until July 30 only – COMELEC

The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) will begin processing applications for new voters’ registration for the upcoming barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections from July 15, Friday until July 30, Saturday – inclusive of weekends and holidays.  This year’s barangay and SK polls are scheduled to be held on October 31.

According to COMELEC Resolution 10151, the poll body has until September 11 to finalize the voters’ list, which will then have to be posted online by September 16. As stipulated in the Sangguniang Kabataan Reform Act of 2015 or Republic Act 10742, Filipinos who are at least 15 years old but not more than 30 years of age may register as a voter.

They are also required to have resided in the place where they propose to vote for at least six (6) months immediately preceding the election may register as a voter. For example, if you are planning to register in Batasan Hills, Quezon City, you should have living in that community since April, 2016.

COMELEC spokesperson James Jimenez however clarified that RA 10742 mandates that only voters who are aged 18 to 24 can seek elective positions at the SK level.

Prospective new voters can register during the above mentioned days in the nearest local COMELEC office (usually this is in your provincial or municipal hall). The COMELEC usually requires the applicant to show one valid identification card, though it will be more prudent to bring two plus your birth certificate. Also, don’t forget to photocopy all of those documents in advance so you won’t have to leave the queue.
