#WalangPasok – October 31 2016 declared a holiday
Filipinos will have a rare four-day weekend as the month of October comes to an end due to the observance of the All Saints’ Day, which is known locally as Undas.
As stipulated in former President Benigno Aquino III’s Proclamation 1105, both October 31 (Monday) and November 1 (Tuesday) are special non-working holidays. You can read more about Proclamation 1105 through this link.
During the Halloween weekend, thousands of Filipinos go to their respective provinces to pay respects to their departed loved ones. According to the Department of Labor and Employment’s Handbook on Workers’ Statutory Monetary Benefits (2016 edition), those who report for work on these days are entitled to get an additional 30% on their regular hourly pay rate.
*1st 8 hours – plus 30% of the daily rate of 100%
*excess of 8 hours – plus 30% of hourly rate on said day
So, if you are a minimum-wage earner (P481 in Metro Manila):
P60.10 (the hourly pay) X 0.30 (the additional pay) = P78.13 (your special holiday rate)
However, keep in mind that as per DOLE rules, the holiday premium is only for employees who are present or who are on leave of absence with pay on the workday immediately preceding the holiday (in this case, October 28). In other words, never try to go AWOL in order to prolong your vacation!
