Mathematics month theme 2016: “The future of predictions”

Just like last year, it appears that the Department of Education (DepEd) once again did not set aside a specific week or month for the celebration of mathematics exclusively. This is based on the school calendar being used for the current academic year 2016 to 2017.

In the absence of an official theme from DepEd, Math teachers in elementary and high schools nationwide can consider the theme developed by the American Mathematical Society for the 2016 Mathematics Awareness Month, which is “The Future of Prediction.”

The group elucidated on this in a statement, which reads in part:

“Throughout Mathematics Awareness Month 2016, we will explore how mathematics and statistics are the future of prediction, providing insights and driving innovation. During the month, we will be asking the question, “What’s next?” and exploring how mathematicians and statisticians contribute to society.

Effective prediction is essential to improving medicine; monitoring climate; providing sufficient, safe food supplies; and much more. Mathematics and statistics provide fundamental tools to see and shape the road ahead. “

In the Philippines, making mathematical predictions can have profound impact on many fields including economics, demographic studies, public health, among others. Many elementary and high schools across the country are expected to celebrate Mathematics Month this January 2017.
