LABOR DAY – May 1 2017 declared holiday nationwide

Filipinos nationwide will have a three-day weekend later this month as the country have its annual celebration of Labor Day on May 1. The occassion, which is also known as Araw ng Paggawa, this year falls on Monday.

May 1 has been declared a regular holiday through President Rodrigo Duterte’s Proclamation 50, which he signed last August 2016. Labor Day is the fifth regular holiday for 2016, with the next one coming on June 12  for the Independence Day which also falls on Monday.

Those working or studying in Metro Manila, for their part, will have as much as four consecutive rest days because Malacanang has effectively declared April 28 a special non-working holiday to give way for the preparations in connection to the 2017 Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit that the country is hosting.

According to the Department of Labor and Employment’s Handbook on Workers’ Statutory Monetary Benefits (2016 edition), those who will report for work on this day should get twice or 200% their hourly rate for every hour of service rendered – which is typically referred to as “double pay.” Meanwhile, employees who will stay at home are still entitled to get 100% of their daily rate.

To be eligible for these benefits, employees should be present or be on official leave of absence with pay on the work day immediately preceding the holiday which in this case is April 28 (April 27 for workers in Metro Manila).
