May 26 2017 is not a holiday – NCMF
The National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) clarified today that May 26 (Friday) is not a special non-working holiday, contrary to what is being speculated by some users on social media because it is the first day of the holy month of Ramadan for Muslims.
In response to a query from The Filipino Scribe, a staffer from the NCMF’s Office of the Secretary explained that the first day of Ramadan is never declared a holiday anywhere in the country. True enough, it is not included in the official list of Muslim holidays based on Proclamation 1083, which was signed by then-President Ferdinand Marcos in 1977.
The staffer declined to have his name published because he was not authorized by his superiors to speak on the matter. There will still be two nationwide Muslim holidays this year – Eid’l Fitr and Eid’l Adha.
The NCMF will make recommendations to the Malacañang regarding the dates in which the said religious holidays will be observed based on the moonsighting activities they will be doing in the coming months.
PS: The persistent rumors have forced Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea to issue an official statement denying that May 26 is a holiday. Case closed!
