PUP postpones calendar shift; classes set to begin June 19
The Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) will not be pushing through its planned shift in academic calendar this year.
The university announced today through its social media platforms that academic year 2017-2018 will still start this June instead of August, as originally scheduled. Classes for the first semester will now resume by June 19, with the enrollment set to begin this June 5. It is not clear though when PUP will push through with the academic calendar shift, if at all.
According to the announcement, the university’s Executive Committee led by PUP President Emanuel C. De Guzman decided that it is best to defer the implementation of the academic calendar shift “in line with the on-going review of the Implementing Rules and Regulations of the Commission on Higher Education on Free Tuition Fee for all State Universities and Colleges.”
For their part, a lot of PUP students are complaining about this abrupt announcement of the university. Some complained online that they have already made plans for what they expected to be two additional months of break – including booking vacation trips and seeking temporary employment.
Several tertiary institutions have moved the opening of their school calendar from June to August in recent years including the University of the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila University, and De La Salle University.
In defending the move, then-UP President Alfredo Pascual said in 2014 that it is necessary to synchronize UP’s academic calendar with the major universities in ASEAN and in the rest of the world because “it will provide a clear signal that UP is now internationalizing and is getting ready to fully engage universities in our partners countries.”
