LONG WEEKEND – June 12 2017 declared a holiday

Filipinos will be marking the country’s 119th Independence Day (“Araw ng Kalayaan“) this coming June 12. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Kalayaan 2017: .”

The day is a regular holiday as stipulated in President Rodrigo Duterte’s Proclamation 50, which he signed August of last year. Since this year’s Independence Day falls on a  Monday, it will pave the way for a three-day weekend for most Pinoys.

Since June 12 falls on a Monday, it is expected that employees in certain sectors especially the business process outsourcing industry will be required to report for work.

In that eventuality, they are legally entitled to receive 200% of their regular hourly rate depending on the number of hours of service rendered (colloquially called the “double pay”). This is mandated in the Department of Labor and Employment‘s Handbook on Statutory Monetary Benefits – 2016 edition.
