EID’L FITR – June 26 2017 declared a holiday

(Updated: June 17, 2017)

Muslims throughout the world will be observing the end of the holy month of Ramadan or Eid’l Fitr during the last weekend of June.

In line with this, President Rodrigo Duterte has declared June 26 as a national holiday upon the recommendation of the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF). Duterte made the announcement through Proclamation 235, which he signed this June 16.

It has been widely expected that June 26 will be a holiday because Ramadan officially began last May 26, according to a calendar provided by NCMF. This is the second time that Filipinos will have a three-day weekend this month of June.

Eid’l Fitr is a national holiday as mandated by Republic Act (RA) 9177, which was enacted in 2002 during the term of then-President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. The full text of RA 9177 can be accessed in this link.

It does not have a fixed date, so every year, the NCMF is mandated by law to be the one responsible for recommending to the Office of the President the dates on which the religious occasions would fall based on their observations of the moon.
