NEW START – The Filipino Scribe leaves BlueHost, moves to DreamHost

The Filipino Scribe (TFS) was intermittently inaccessible to most readers from September 8 to 12 as it switched from BlueHost to DreamHost as its web hosting provider.

DreamHost offers the same standard VPS service at a much-lower price than BlueHost, and TFS intends to realign the budget that would have been spent on hosting renewals to finance necessary site design upgrades in the near future.

TFS was first launched in 2011 as www.rightonthemark.wordpress.com, and this URL still redirects to www.FilipinoScribe.com to this day. It had its own domain beginning 2013, and it became self-hosted a year later.  Being a self-hosted blog site made it possible for TFS to apply and get accepted for Google Adsense placements, which is the main source of income for most bloggers.

BlueHost only charged TFS $170 per year for this shared server service, which is roughly P8500. That amount can be easily regained in about three months of Google Adsense earnings. It is worth pointing out each year, website owners typically spend the most on their hosting plans more than anything else.

However, that changed one day last May 2016 when TFS became inaccessible for several hours due to a DDOS attack by supporters of this particular presidential candidate. BlueHost emphasized that they can only put the site back up by availing their VPS service. The cost is $33 a month, or roughly P1500.

However, as the months went by, it became apparent that spending this much for a hosting service isn’t worth it. For 2014 and 2015, you can reasonably estimate that 1,000 page views will translate to US $1 of Adsense earnings. But from 2016, it appears that is no longer that the cost per impression (CPM) has greatly lowered.

TFS would like to thank Mr. Norman Glenn Guemo of The Eight Rays (www.The EightRays.com) for helping facilitate the very complex migration process. Without his assistance, this switch wouldn’t have been possible.
