The Filipino Scribe wins in the first-ever #BreakTheFake Blogathon 2017

The Filipino Scribe founder and executive editor Mark Pere Madrona won 2nd place in Break the Fake Movement’s 2017 blogathon challenge held last November 19. The event is an on-the-spot blog writing competition with focus on the theme, “Maximizing youth participation in addressing fake news.”

Madrona’s official entry for the competition was titled “Fighting Fake News: It’s On Us!” The blog post, which is now published both in FilipinoScribe.com and in the organizer’s official website, began by emphasizing that the youth, as future leaders of the nation, cannot take a backseat in the fight against fake news. He teamed-up with Alvin Daniel Bañas, a fourth year BS Economics student from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines-Manila.

The article then went on to elucidate several suggestions by which the youth can play a more proactive role in this long-struggle, knowing how to determine which news stories are fake and in sharing that knowledge to other people.

In his entry, Madrona stressed that other sectors, including the media as well as the academe, must also do their part in fighting the proliferation of fake news stories by nurturing the importance of critical-thinking and in demanding accountability from the nation’s leaders. He added that with the help of parents, a culture of truth-telling can be started even at home.

“I am dedicating this latest win to the Lord for giving me this amazing talent for writing, for my Mama and the rest of my supportive family (as always, I surprised them again!), as well as my former mentors who instilled in me the passion for news and current events. I’ll keep making you all proud!” Madrona wrote on his Facebook page.

Earlier this year, Madrona won 2nd place in the 2017 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) essay writing contest – teachers category. Participants in that competition were asked to write about what they think is the most gender sensitive movie during the 2016 MMFF. He wrote about Jun Robles Lana’s “Die Beautiful” and its main protagonist Trisha Echevarria.
