LIST: PAGASA’s typhoon names for 2018
According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), an average of 20 tropical cyclones enter the Philippine area of responsibility every year. This 2017, the last one being tropical storm “Vinta” which caused the death of almost 300 people across Mindanao.
Below is the list of names that PAGASA will be using for tropical cyclones that will enter the Philippine area of responsibility this 2018, according to the website www.typhoon2000.ph. PAGASA has four sets of typhoon names that are being used once every for years. That means that most of the names listed below have been already used back in 2014, but some have been replaced including “Glenda” (replaced with “Gardo’) and Jose (replaced with “Josie”).
It has been customary for PAGASA as well as other meteorological agencies around the world to “retire” a tropical cyclone name if it has caused a lot of deaths as well as widespread damage to agriculture, infrastructures, and other properties. In the Philippines, a typhoon’s name will be retired if it has caused the death of at least 300 people or if it has resulted in not less than P1 billion in damages.
