NORWEGIA – Pinoy netizens cringe as PCOO commits yet another boo-boo

Norwegia? Where’s that?

The Presidential Communications Operations Office or PCOO committed yet another faux pas Thursday afternoon when it erroneously described Erik Forner, the outgoing ambassador of Norway to the Philippines, as “the representative of Norwegia.”

The Facebook post remained unedited for several hours, which enabled netizens to take screenshots of it. President Rodrigo Duterte conferred to Forner the Order of Sikatuna award with the rank of Datu at the Malacañang Palace last June 13.

It can be recalled that PCOO made headlines last year when it used the logo of Dole Corporation for a news report about the Department of Labor and Employment. For her part, PCOO Assistant Secretary Mocha Uson also earned mockery when she said in a short video that the Mayon Volcano is in Naga City, Camarines Sur.

PCOO’s newest flub prompted netizens to make humorous references to other fictional places like Genovia (from the 2002 movie Princess Diaries), Arendelle (from the 2013 animated film Frozen), and Wakanda (from the 2018 superhero flick Black Panther).

For his part, University of the Philippines Diliman economics professor JC Punongbayan noted that small mistakes like this are hard to accept given that PCOO’s budget for 2018 is P1.38 billion.

Fast fact:

The Order of Sikatuna is awarded to individuals “who have rendered exceptional and meritorious services to the Republic of the Philippines; upon diplomats, officials, and nationals of foreign states who have rendered conspicuous service in fostering, developing, and strengthening relations between their country and the Philippines.” Past recipients include former United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, former United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, as well as Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan.
