DepEd launches Brigada Eskwela 2021 with “Bayanihan para sa Paaralan” as official theme

The Department of Education (DepEd) is set to have its annual Brigada Eskwela from August 3 to September 30, 2021 for public elementary and secondary schools nationwide – merely three weeks since school year 2020-2021 officially ended.

Formally known as the National Schools Maintenance Week, the theme for this year’s Brigada Eskwela is “Bayanihan para sa Paaralan.” It will be formally launched on August 3 led by the School Divisions Office of Tagum City, Davao del Norte.

During this week, school administrators, teachers, students, their parents, and volunteers from both government offices and non-government organizations work together to improve the school’s facilities. Before the pandemic, Brigada Eskwela activities include repainting classrooms and other parts of the school building, thorough cleaning, repairing damaged chairs, desks, tables, etc., among others. Private entities are also expected to make donations during this period.

Just like last in 2020, this year’s Brigada Eskwela is expected to focus on gathering donations for the implementation of blended learning in public schools like bond papers, ink, and printers for the reproduction of modules as well as tablets and the like for online classes.

Started in 2003, Brigada Eskwela has three main objectives:

1) to practice shared governance,
2) to bring the spirit of education to the community level, and
3) to utilize local resources to public schools.

The conduct of “Brigada Eskwela” is mandated by the Adopt-A-School Act of 1998. The law paved the way for private entities to help schools of their choice in the area of staff and faculty development for training and further education, construction of facilities; upgrading of existing facilities, provision of books, publications and other instructional materials, and modernization of instructional technologies.

Interested parties may directly contact the schools where they want to volunteer for details on how they can help. More information about Brigada Eskwela can be read through this manual released by DepEd.
