My experience receiving the COVID-19 booster shot from Moderna

As reported by The Filipino Scribe last December 21, the Philippine Department of Health (DOH) has already shortened the prescribed time period before you can be eligible to receive a booster shot against COVID-19 after getting your second dose. Previously, people who were fully vaccinated against COVID-19 with AstraZeneca, Moderna, Pfizer, Sinopharm, Sinovac, and Sputnik have to wait for 180 days before they can get a third jab. Meanwhile, the interval before those who received the single-dose COVID-19 vaccine from Johnson & Johnson can get their booster shot has been shortened from 90 to 60 days.

Originally, I have to wait until January 14, 2022 at the earliest before I can have my COVID-19 booster shot. I became fully-vaccinated with Sinovac last July 16, 2021 – just over three months after our entire family survived the infectious disease. But the recent announcement of DOH meant that I am qualified to receive the booster shot immediately, and so I booked an appointment right away.

Thankfully, booking an appointment through the Quezon City local government’s QC Vax Easy portal only took a few minutes. I was able to get a schedule for 10:00 AM of December 23, 2021 at the Batasan Hills National High School. I’m grateful to receive Moderna after being fully vaccinated with Sinovac last July.

COVID-19 booster shot Moderna
This writer received his COVID-19 booster shot from Moderna last December 23

The World Health Organization explained that the Moderna vaccine is highly-effective in protecting people from severe disease and death since it “has been shown to have an efficacy of approximately 94.1 percent in protecting against COVID-19.”

According to clinical trial data collected by the makers of Moderna, the most commonly reported side effects after the booster shot were:

Injection site pain
Fatigue
Headache
Muscle pain
Joint pain
As of this time, I am experiencing injection site pain, fatigue, and headache – which are all within the range of normal side effects. Of course, it is annoying to experience these during Christmas Eve but going through minor inconvenience is more preferable than being at a higher risk of getting COVID-19. Please get vaccinated right away to protect ourselves from what is being predicted to be another surge in cases by January due to the omicron variant!
