United Nations month theme for 2022 – “International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development”

The United Nations (UN) will be celebrating its 77nd foundation anniversary this 24 October 2022. This is why October of every year is known all over the world, including the Philippines, as the UN month. The Philippines, it must be emphasized, is one of the original 51 UN member-states.

In connection with this, the UN has designated 2022 as the “International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development.”

Activities in connection to the theme will be held in elementary, secondary, and tertiary schools all over the Philippines. The celebration are usually led by the schools’ respective Social Studies Departments and UN student clubs.

In a speech delivered last April, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said that the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development 2022 “is an opportunity to place the sustainability and resilience of mountain ecosystems and communities at the heart of international processes, policies and investments within the framework of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.”

He added: “I urge the international community to observe the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development along with the United Nations system.  Let us work together for sustainable mountain development so mountain peoples and the planet as a whole can thrive.”
