#WalangPasok – September 8 2023 to be declared holiday in Pampanga?

(UPDATED, 5 SEPTEMBER 2023)

Kapampangang will be celebrating the 67th anniversary of the canonical coronation of Virgen De los Remedios, the patroness of the province, this 8 September 2023. According to the Archdiocese of San Fernando, the theme for this year’s celebration is “Kalupa Mung Mikapnuan king Grasia, Abayan Mu kaming Mangapnu Mu naman king Grasia.”

In line with this, Governor Dennis Pineda of Pampanga has announced the suspension of classes in all levels as well as work in government offices effective 12:00 PM of September 8. Pineda made the declaration through Executive Order 29-2023 which has been posted on the official Facebook page of the Pampanga Public Information Office.

It is important to emphasize that this announcement does not mean that September 8 has been declared a special non-working day because classes and work in government offices during the morning shift would still go ahead.

Known in the vernacular as Indu Ning Capaldanan, the Virgen de los Remedios de la Pampanga has a long history. During the 1950s, then-Pampanga Archbishop Cesar Maria Guerrero cultivated among the Kapampangan faithful the need for Marian devotion. During that time, the province was experiencing political and social unrest due to the Communist insurgency.

In February 1956, Archbishop Guerrero wrote to Pope Pius XII to ask him to grant canonical coronation to the Virgen De los Remedios, a request that His Holiness granted through a Papal Bull released July 15 1956.  The Virgen De los Remedios feast day of September 8 coincides with the Nativity of the Virgin Mary.

It must be stressed though that Angeles City is not included in this announcement because of its status as a highly-urbanized city, which means it is autonomous from the provincial government of Pampanga.
