#WalangPasok – December 8 2023 declared a special non-working holiday nationwide

Roman Catholics in the Philippines and around the world will be celebrating the annual Feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary this December 8, Friday. The holiday will effectively most Filipinos a three-day weekend.

The said day is a special non-working holiday nationwide by virtue of Republic Act 10966, which then-President Rodrigo Duterte signed into law in 2017. Previously, only Catholic schools including the University of Santo Tomas observe December 8 as a no-class day.

According to the 2023_edition of Department and Labor and Employment’s (DOLE)_Handbook_on_Workers_Statutory_Monetary_Benefits, the “no work, no pay” principle should be in effect during special non-working holidays like this year’s celebration of the Feast of Immaculate Conception

In line with this, workers who are not required or permitted to work on December 8 anywhere in the Philippines are not entitled to receive any compensation unless there is a collective bargaining agreement or a company policy that implements that.

The handbook likewise highlighted that employees who work during special non-working days must receive an additional pay of 30% for every hour that they render service.
