Veteran entertainment journalist and TV host Cristy Fermin is under fire from the fans of AlDub love team (the moniker given to the pairing of Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza) over a column that was published in Pilipino Star Ngayon for July 26, Tuesday.
The back-and-forth began shortly after Richards made a surprise visit to Fermin during her birthday party last July 23. The visit was even reported by GMA Network, the on-screen couple’s home network, on its news website last July 24.
In her Tuesday column, Fermin lamented that some individuals seems to have taken issue out of Richards’ visit during her birthday bash. For example, Fermin noted that there are those who questioned why Mendoza didn’t come with Richards during the event.
Fermin also noted that some unspecified individuals have said that Richards’ should not have gone to her birthday party because of her occasional criticisms of Mendoza. “These people seem to have forgotten that my columns have been supportive of Maine for the past year,” Fermin wrote in Filipino.
Fermin then vigorously defended Richards’ visit to her birthday party, saying that it only goes to show that the actor remains humble and thoughtful despite his meteoric popularity.
Fermin also stressed that although they are on-screen partners, Richards and Mendoza remains to be separate individuals.

Unsurprisingly, AlDub fans are not at all happy with Fermin’s latest column. As of Tuesday night, the hashtag #BoyCottCristyFermin is a top trending topic on the social networking site Twitter. Meanwhile, someone started a petition on Change.org asking for the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board to suspend Fermin from appearing in her shows in TV5. It has so far gathered almost 3,000 signatures.
Many AlDub fans on social media meanwhile pointed out that apart from her column, Fermin was also highly critical of Mendoza through her program in Radyo Singko 92.3 News FM. In fact, one user listed the harsh words supposedly used by Fermin and her listeners to describe the young actress.
