United Nations Month theme 2014: “International Year of Family Farming”
Schools throughout the Philippines and around the world will be celebrating the annual United Nations month this coming October.
As a guide for their respective activities, event organizers can use the themes provided by the United Nations (UN). According to the website of UN, 2014 can be characterized as follows:
1) International Year of Solidarity with the Palestinian People
2) International Year of Small Island Developing States
3) International Year of Crystallography
4) International Year of Family Farming
Despite the absence of an official advisory/guide from the Department of Education, it is obvious that of the four, themes number 2 and 4 are the most relevant for the Philippines.
In a General Assembly resolution dated December 2012, the UN explained that the declaration of 2014 as the “International Year of Small Island Developing States” aims to recognize “the importance of coordinated, balanced and integrated actions to address the sustainable development challenges facing small island developing States.”
“The International Year of Small Island Developing States will celebrate the contributions that this group of countries has made to the world. Small island developing states are home to vibrant and distinct cultures, diversity and heritage,” a statement on the UN website further expounded.
The fourth mentioned theme is perhaps the most pertinent for Filipinos. In a resolution dated March 2012, the UN noted that “family farming and smallholder farming are an important basis for sustainable food production aimed at achieving food security.”
