#WalangPasok – June 19 2023 declared a holiday in Laguna

The country will be marking the 162nd birth anniversary of national hero Jose Rizal this June 19, Monday. The day, dubbed as “Araw ng Kapanganakan ni Dr. Jose Rizal,” is a special non-working holiday in Rizal’s home province Laguna, including his birthpace Calamba City.

This is stipulated in Republic Act 11144, which was signed into law by then-President Rodrigo Duterte back in 2018. The full text of RA 11144 can be read here.

PAY RULES FOR JUNE 19, 2023 SPECIAL NON-WORKING HOLIDAY IN LAGUNA

As mentioned in the 2022_DOLE_Handbook_on_Workers_Statutory_Monetary_Benefits, the “no work, no pay” principle should be in effect during special non-working holidays.

This means that workers who are not required or permitted to work in the province of Laguna on June 19 are not due to receive any compensation unless there is a collective bargaining agreement or a company policy that implements that.

The handbook likewise highlighted that employees who work during special non-working days are entitled to receive an additional pay of 30% for every hour that they render service.
